About the World Category

Internationalization

There are 90 languages represented in DMOZ World. If your language is not among these and you are interested in building out categories in languages that are not yet available, we will create your native language category and you can sign up as an editor for it. Please include your login name in your email so that we can notify you when the new category is created. In addition, help us by translating the following information so that we can create the correct subcategories in the new language. Below are the standard subcategories used throughout the directory.

  1. English (give the name of the language you want, e.g. Español. This will become World/Español/... in the directory).
  2. Arts
  3. Business
  4. Computers
  5. Games
  6. Health
  7. Home
  8. News

The text used in the public pages and in the forms that make up the editor interface are translated from English into the language of the category (for publicly-viewable pages) or into the language that an editor uses. Editors listed in a World/language category can update these translations via a dedicated interface.

Top 3 Most Frequently Asked Questions About the World Category

Can it be español.dmoz.org instead of dmoz.org/World/Español, and have a proper main page like Wikipedia does?
We plan to map the World categories onto their own .dmoz.org domains in the future, but haven't done so yet.
What is the relationship between dmoz.org/Regional and dmoz.org/World?
The Regional category is for English language sites. For example, Regional: Europe: Spain would list sites about Spain in English. On the other hand, the World category is for sites in languages other than English. For example, World/Español/Regional/España would list Spanish-language sites about Spain with descriptions in Spanish.
How should I list multiple language versions of the same site?
If it is easy to switch to different languages from the main page of a site, then list the main page of the site in the correct language category. If the language versions aren't easily accessible, list each language individually in the correct language category. If there are different domain names for different language versions of the same site, you can list each site in the appropriate language category. For example, http://www.hsbc.com/ and http://www.hsbc.com.cn/ should be listed individually because the domain names are different and it is hard to access the other versions from the main, English language site.
