A young carer is under 18 years of age. They help look after a parent, brother, sister or another relative or friend who due to their disability, frailty, illness or vulnerability cannot care for themselves without help. Young carers face serious caring responsibilities. In addition to the daily tasks they complete for their parents such as housework, cooking and bathing, they live with the added pressure of school and, often, a lack of understanding from schoolmates.
